About Us

  ABOUT

We are in home breeders.  We do not have a kennel, and our furfriends have the run of the home, as all members of the family do.  This is our passion, not our livelihood.  We began raising furbabies many years ago, the oldest is now 14 ish (see Chelsea's page), but breeding experience spans over 25 years.  We previously raised and bred Goldens, then my mother was diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis, and it got much harder to handle the larger dogs. We then made a decision to continue raising only these precious "lion" dogs. Our dogs are members of the family, and everyone in the family owns them!! They go with us everywhere - work, school, kids classes, even shopping (how some love to be in bags, and people think they are stuffed animals!!) and vacations - many of them enjoy a luxurious Florida vacation every year.

NEW NOTE:

We have found the Shih Tzu Breeding world has become way too large within the last year.  You see many new “home” breeders popping up – yet, they have over 15 dogs and have started in the last year – though they will most likely tell you they have been in it “forever”.  A breeder who just began a year ago, should not have that many dogs… No one should.  There is simply no benefit to the breed by just "breeding".  Too many times I have seen people buy adults so they can “get on the bandwagon”…  We have never purchased an adult dog, especially for breeding.  We choose to raise them from babies and take the time necessary to properly socialize, and watch them grow.  Our oldest "purchased" dog was 12 weeks.  It is very sad to watch these "adult" dogs move from breeder to breeder.   As much as people would like to believe, when breedings are done correctly - it is not in anyway a money making venture. Many of these new in home breeders - when you talk to them – you will find in actuality – the dogs are in “part” of the home, but it is set like a kennel, or their dogs stay in their homes for only a few months, then are moved out to "kennel areas".   These are normally the people also involved in "breeder wars".  This is no way to behave and there is no sense to belittle another breeder to try and appear better.  Everyone should have the same goals, and attempt to work together.  Many ask why we do not give full registration, even to “hobby home breeders”.  Because much of the quality has gone right out the door,  because there is simply SO many dogs/breeders – selling to “anyone” just to place their dogs and ours will not enter into that type of situation, and "breeder wars" .  We will not be involved with that.  I have also done many, many years of research on my dogs.  I know what will be produced, I know what they will grow into, I know the faults, the qualities, the pros and cons of each of my own breedings.  I do not see anyone putting the time or effort into their "breeding programs" anymore.  Therefore, they will remain on limited registrations, and I have remain steadfast in that decision, and it is our choice.  To each his/her own, and you get what you pay for, from some, and from others, you get alot more.  We strive for the "more".

What is a home breeder? This means that my furbabies live inside our homes - they are not tied up or kenneled all day, outdoors or inside. They also do not have a "room" in which they live specifically.  They are not in specially made boxes or pens or any such thing.  We do have crates here (huge, great dane size). They are left open for the tzus to go into if they choose, as sometimes they prefer the den feeling. I do however, place my tzus in one area and put up a gate when grooming, or upon puppy pick up.  You are welcome to meet the furbabies, and we welcome visitors to our homes by appointment and will be happy to provide any information or references requested - previous puppy buyers, vets, and so on.  You may visit when a prospective mating has been announced or at any other time when nothing is going on.  We will not, however, allow any visitors when there are new babies or when there is a lady in waiting.   It is just too risky for their health.  PLEASE DO NOT ASK!!   We will be more than happy to help assist you in finding a perfect match for you, as you cannot see them "hands on".  We will not pick a pup for you, but will help guide you to one that may be a suitable match (i.e. smaller babies should not be placed in homes with small children, and so on).  And if it comes to be a time that your pup may not be suitable for your surroundings (such as one who is smaller with a house with children) - we will recommend changes.

Understand that girls tend to throw each other in heat, and there may be a few litters at a time or none at all.  Quality is something you wait for, it cannot be rushed!

We are very hands on with pups and feel that each litter deserves much attention - therefore giving proper socialization.  The pups are loved and held (all day!) from birth till they leave our hands and are placed into yours.

Some of our adults have lines that possess champions, some do not. Though the dogs have excellent lineage, most traced back 40 plus years, we do not use the "lines" to promote the dogs, but we will be happy to show you their pedigrees if you request.  Per the American Shih Tzu Club : "The term "champion lines" means nothing if those titles are back three or more generations or if there are only one or two in the whole pedigree. Also, remember that not all champions are created equal and that a champion may or may not produce quality puppies." We have seen many people promoting their dogs with "fabulous" pedigrees, and the pedigrees are not listed on their site (don't promote it if I cannot readily see it) , or they name names from the lines to help promote their dogs, whether those lines are 2 (or even 10 generations) back.  We also see breeders promoting their dogs/pups as "show dogs", but these breeders have never shown or have never had a dog shown for them.  How can you assess an animal in such a manner if you have never had any participation or first hand experience in it?  You can't!!  And most show dogs cannot truly be assessed until they are at least 6 months old.  Again, we do not promote the furbabies based upon their lines or "fabulous" pedigrees, as some breeders do.  The pups speak for themselves.  We will not/do not sell "show dogs" either, even though we do show.  One simply just cannot tell.

When we purchase a dog for ourselves, it is nice to see the pedigrees, but we look first for conformation and quality of the parents, and at the previous litters from those dogs if possible.  We look for those who are excellent representations of the breed.  We, as most, have gotten some dogs that just have not turned out the way we envisioned or hoped. Though some may possess beauty, or nice conformation, or a nice coat, or great lines, or great color, we breed only those who have the temperament, personality, and all of the other traits mentioned in one package. When looking for dogs, have a look at the pedigree when you find one you like - if you do not understand the pedigree when you do see it, ask, it should be explained to you. You will find that many breeders who promote their lines to the hilt, have many of the same (dog) lineage as the breeder who does not (promote lines). The breedings are carefully selected, based on qualities and dogs who will compliment one another - I trial mate our dogs using their pedigrees and any and all personal information that I have about their ancestors, through a program, which helps me identify many different factors. We follow AKC regulations and guidelines, as well as the American Shih Tzu Club guidelines, and follow our club's code of ethics, in every way, there fore enabling us to bring you an excellent furbaby.

   Our Ethics and Goals Outlined:

We are proud to be ethical home breeders and not a kennel.  AKC is not a policing agency, therefore it is up to each individual breeder to be ethical regarding their foundation animals. An ethical breeder knows that doing right by their breed takes countless hours and funds, and is never a decision to enter into lightly. They also realize that though championship titles are nice - they do not guarantee the health and soundness of the titled dog or the puppies that these dogs may produce. Generally, the public is not looking to breed, show or campaign their dog. They are looking for a healthy family member that is a good representative of the breed. For those of you that are looking strictly to breed, this is not the place for you. All of our puppies are sold on a "limited" AKC registration. Those that are seeking a show prospect with breeding privileges must be known exhibitors, and references are required.

Purchasing your puppy from a pet shop or from an uninformed or unethical breeder can be a very risky and costly choice, so do keep that in mind. You get what you pay for, however, we choose to keep our costs very reasonable and do not "jack up pricing" because of "rare or unique colors" nor "smaller sizes". Make a wise decision.  Quality is not cheap, quantity is.  Be wary of those who produce strictly for color, and stud their dogs out constantly to numerous people just for a buck.  We will not stud outside to anyone, nor will any of our dogs go with a full registration.

Though many of us "run the same lines" - it is what we do with it that matters.

Our goal in breeding is to produce a puppy that exceeds the quality of their parents.

This should be the goal of every breeder.

We breed for quality, health, conformation, temperament, an excellent personality topped with loads of color, huge coats and NICE EYES!!

Our dogs - Under each of our dogs, I have placed a small description.  This is my interpretation, all in fun.  However, each of our puppies have wonderful well rounded personalities and are very eager to learn, to cuddle, and snuggle.  We can provide numerous references, please just ask!!

In our location, we am very, very far away from any dog shows.  But do we show any of the family? Yes, we do! Very few "breeders" show, and we have yet to find any "home breeders" who are widely on the net that do.   Look around - ask... why not?  Showing gives one the ability to have their animal assessed by a neutral party.  Visit our new Show page for some exciting new information!!  Many of our furfriends are kept in coat, though not all. Those who remain in coat - this in no way hinders their play, or is uncomfortable for them, or restricts them what so ever! We do not bind them, wrap them, or keep them in cages.  Those who are in coat, and more so, those who show, still run around and play outside, in the mud, in the grass, and roll in the hay!  If anything, it makes a bit more work for us :o) !  Though all of the family enjoy showing, we still believe the fun and socialization of it all should play top priority before anything else.
